SMU Is Getting A New NHL-size Rink!

The 53-year-old rink will close at the end of this month, the new one is to open in 2019.

Saint Mary’s University announced yesterday that the existing rink will close at the end of March and then the fencing will go up right away.

The new arena is expected to be ready for the fall of 2019.

The facility will feature a NHL-size ice surface, with seating for 800 people and standing room for another 200.

So many memories from the old SMU barn from my hockey days in the Metro Media Hockey League in the early 90’s. It was one of the coldest to play in during the middle of January on a Thursday night…

My son’s Drake and Trent both played there in their ‘careers’ in minor hockey and high school hockey days plus officiated in the vintage arena.

Thanks for the memories to the old lady on Tower Road! Here’s to making new ones at the new NHL sized facility.
