The Music World Has Lost a Legend

Tom Petty died last night at age 66 in Los Angeles a day after he suffered cardiac arrest at his home in Malibu, California.

Petty and his longtime band the Heartbreakers had recently completed a 40th anniversary tour, one he hinted would be their last.

Tom Petty broke through in the 1970’s and went on to sell more than 80 million records. His albums included “Damn the Torpedoes,” that was what got me listening to the band, ”Hard Promises” and “Full Moon Fever” that featured what many say was his signature song “Free Fallin’.” His other many hits included “Refugee,” “Runnin’ Down a Dream”and “I Won’t Back Down.”

He inspired many of today’s Hot Country stars including Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Kenny Chesney and Eric Church.

I just bought his biography last month, he had a rough up bringing in Gaineville Florida. Petty always wanted to be a rock star, and man did he ever become one…

I was lucky enough to see him here on May 31st , 2012 at the then Metro Centre. When he came out on the stage he said “We finally made it to Halifax.”

Thanks for the music and soundtrack to our lives Tom Petty, gone way too soon.
