BLAKE SHELTON was the “big” winner at last night’s “CMT Music Awards”. He picked up two trophies for “I’ll Name the Dogs”. It won Video of the Year and Male Video of the Year.
He also performed on the roof of his Ole Red bar in Nashville.
CARRIE UNDERWOOD won Female Video of the Year for her collaboration with LUDACRIS on “The Champion”. It was her record-setting 18th CMT award.
Some newbies stood out: KANE BROWN and LAUREN ALAINA won Collaborative Video of the Year for “What Ifs”. It was his first trophy.
CARLY PEARCE was in tears accepting the Breakthrough Video of the Year award for “Every Little Thing”. And she ended it perfectly, saying, “To the guy that broke my heart. Thank you.” (Obviously, he inspired the song.)
As far as the show, unfortunately, it opened with a lame Royal Wedding spoof. Maybe they were trying to ease in LITTLE BIG TOWN on their first year hosting. Next year give them a monologue and see what happens, they’ll be fine.
Because the CMTs are held in thesummer they love going to the outside stage. I did enjoy CHRIS STAPLETON singing “Millionaire”, but LUKE BRYAN’s “Sunrise, Sunburn, Sunset” didn’t work for me.
SAM HUNT started his “Downtown’s Dead” from inside a downtown bar, naturally. And then he took it outside and ducked into a few others before ending up on the big stage. It was gimmicky, but I liked it. Made me want to be in . . . downtown Nashville.
DIERKS BENTLEY performed in front of real flames while doing “Burning Man”. He was joined by his Mountain High Tour opening act, BROTHERS OSBORNE.
You know how award shows can get a little boring? That’s when you have Carrie Underwood blow the roof off the place with “Cry Pretty”. And later, when the energy dips again, let KELLY CLARKSON show you a real “American Woman”.
This year’s big finish brought Darius Rucker, Jason Aldean, Charles Kelley and Luke Bryan together to perform “Straight to Hell”. It’s from Darius’s album, “When Was the Last Time”, and it’s classic country. (Here’s a clip.)
Here’s your complete list of last night’s winners . . .
• Video of the Year: “I’ll Name the Dogs”, Blake Shelton
• Male Video of the Year: “I’ll Name the Dogs”, Blake Shelton
• Female Video of the Year: “The Champion”, Carrie Underwood featuring Ludacris
• Group Video of the Year: “When Someone Stops Loving You”, Little Big Town
• Duo Video of the Year: “Tequila”, Dan + Shay
• CMT Performance of the Year: “Everybody” . . . Backstreet Boys and Florida Georgia Line, from “CMT Crossroads“.
• Collaborative Video of the Year: “What Ifs”, Kane Brown featuring Lauren Alaina
• Breakthrough Video of the Year: “Every Little Thing”, Carly Pearce
(TasteOfCountry.com has a slide show of red carpet pics. I see Karen Fairchild’s Spanx at #8, Brett Young forgot his socks at #37, somebody didn’t patch Kane Brown’s jeans at #43, and guess the color of Meghan Linsey’s hair at #53.)
(This is interesting. Billboard.com has “34 things you didn’t see on TV at the CMTs.” And now I wish I could have seen Carrie Underwood “do a little shimmy” after singing “Cry Pretty” . . . and Dan + Shay sit on Blake Shelton’s lap.)
(“People” did their photo booth again. Go straight to #7 and feast your eyes on GARRETT HEDLUND, who was a presenter. By the way, please tell me you’ve seen him in “Mudbound“. Terrific performance, great movie.) WISEBROTHERSMEDIA
