The Nova Scotia Health Authority is putting an unpopular decision for the way nurses are paid overtime on hold after many complaints were made. Overtime rates used to be paid for extra shifts regardless of whether a nurse had taken a sick day or vacation day, but with the new proposed plan, overtime rates only apply once a staff member has completed a full cycle of hours during the pay period. Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union president Janet Hazelton says nurses were turning down overtime shifts because of the new rule.
A man from Ontario accused of sexually assaulting a 15 year old girl in a Halifax hotel room says he thought the girl was in her mid-20’s. 46 year old Paul Coburn is on trial this week in Halifax facing 5 sex related charges in connection with the alleged assault in February 2017. Coburn told the court that he simply wanted a back massage and because the hotel spa was closed at the time he would find a woman on craigslist instead.
A university basketball player from Antigonish has died in a boating accident in British Columbia. 19 year old Andrew Milner played 2 seasons at the University of Calgary. Milner and his friend were canoeing in Cranbrook when their boat tipped. His friend made it to shore, but Milner did not.
