Our police commission wants Halifax Regional Police & RCMP to suspend the practice of street checks. Street checks give officers the chance to document information about a person they believe could be of significance to a future investigation. Halifax police say there are no quotas for street checks, they are done on a random basis.

A DNA expert testified yesterday at the sexual assault retrial of Halifax taxi driver Bassam Al-Rawi. In May 2015 Al-Rawi was arrested after a woman was found partially naked and unconscious in the backseat of his taxi. The DNA expert confirmed that there was some female DNA found on Al-Rawi’s face but because it was such a small amount, the probability of it belonging to the victim is 1 in 210 billion.

It was a very sad day in Paris yesterday. A massive blaze at Notre Dame Cathedral devastated the almost 900 year old church. Although the fire is now under control, the cathedral’s iconic spire fell during the many hours it took to battle the blaze. French President Emmanuel Macron says the city will rebuild the cathedral together.
