A 40 year old Halifax man is facing charges including attempted murder after attacking another man with a hatchet early this morning. Police were called to an apartment building on Gottingen Street near Uniacke Street around 12:30AM. A 36 year old man was sent to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.


Halifax council has asked its police commission to come up with an alternative budget after it asked for a $5 million boost over last year’s figures. Yesterday the commission presented a $112 million proposal to councillors, that’s a 4.6% increase to its budget. Most of the increase would be to cover rising salaries.


Compared to last year there are far fewer people being hospitalized this year with the flu in Nova Scotia. Only one adult has died of influenza in Nova Scotia in the past year. Doctors say the improvement has to do with the weaker strain of influenza that’s making the rounds.
