Nova Scotia’s Office of the Medical Examiner has confirmed the first suspected carfentanil-related overdose in Nova Scotia. The presence of carfentanil, a man made opioid that’s 100 times stronger than fentanyl was confirmed last week. The person died in the Halifax area in early March.

The IWK saw a big jump in visits to the emergency department over the winter months. This is leading the Nova Scotia Nurses’ Union to call for a faster expansion of the department. Just in the month of February alone, 29% more visits happened compared to the year before.

Almost 600,000 litres of sewage flowed into the Halifax Harbour after someone broke into a restricted area of the MacKay Bridge. An intruder entered a secured area of the MacKay Bridge around 3:30AM on Saturday and accessed an electrical panel to turn off breakers. That caused the sewage from 5 wastewater pumping stations to spill into the harbour over the course of several hours.
