The Halifax police officer who arrested Nicholas Butcher says the accused emerged from the house saying he was sorry. Sgt. Matthew MacGillvray, who has since died of cancer, said Butcher was suffering from wounds on his neck and a severed hand. The Crown alleges Butcher killed his former girlfriend, Halifax yoga instructor, Kristin Johnston, in March 2016.

$18 million is what Halifax will have to pay over the next decade for its just opened downtown convention centre. The city had banked on using property tax revenues from the Nova Centre to cover its share of costs. However only 30% of the Nova Centre’s office space has been rented.

The provincial government is committing $3.5 million in support of a bid to attract the 2020 North American Indigenous Games to Halifax. The Mi’kmaq Sport Council of Nova Scotia is behind the effort to host the games. The games would include more than 5000 Indigenous participants in 15 events.
