There’s been an update into the investigation of the duplex fire that claimed the lives of 3 people in Lower Sackville. Fire Chief Ken Stuebing says it was smoking materials that weren’t disposed of properly that started a fire in the unit’s basement. 58 year old Marven Hart, 11 year old Carys Whalen and 18 year old Trent Hart died as a result.


A military judge has found a Halifax based sailor guilty of sexually assaulting a subordinate. Master Seaman Daniel Cooper had pleaded not guilty to the charges in relation to an incident aboard HMCS Athabaskan in 2015. The military has promised to crack down on sexual misconduct in the ranks since underlying sexual culture was discovered in 2015.


The new Canadian banknote honouring Viola Desmond features a welcome surprise for many African-Nova Scotians. The banknote features a historic map of Halifax’s north end, home to one of Canada’s oldest black communities. The map includes part of Gottingen Street where the beautician opened a salon, which allowed her to mentor black women from across the country.
