Five jurors have been selected after a murder trial began yesterday in Halifax. Truro police officer Catherine Campbell was found under Halifax’s Macdonald Bridge in September 2015. 29 year old Christopher Garnier is charged with second degree murder and interfering with human remains and has pleaded not guilty.

The budget for Halifax’s police department could go up by 10%. The potential hike could happen despite attempts by city finance officials to cap the increase in the city’s overall budget at 1.6%. The main factor in the hike is a ruling in August that gave police officers annual salary increases each year over a 5 year contract.

Cape Breton Regional Council has moved another step closer to attracting a container terminal to Sydney. Council has approved an agreement to lease or sell a large parcel of harbour land to a private company. There’s no firm deal yet but Mayor Cecil Clarke says an announcement could come very soon.
