A 61 year old man died last night when his car collided head on with a tractor trailer on Highway 104 by Amherst. The collision happened on the eastbound side near exit 2 around 5:30. No one else was injured.


Nova Scotia Power is blaming a damaged pipe for thousands of litres of oil spilling into the Halifax harbour this summer. The utility says cleanup at the Tufts Cove generating station site is now complete after more than 24,000 litres of fuel leaked August 2nd. Of that amount about 5000 litres spilled into the harbour, while the rest leaked into a containment trench and a cooling water system.


Halifax’s environment committee is recommending that regional council eliminate plastic shopping bags in the city. Yesterday the committee voted down the staff recommendation to work with businesses to reduce the number of plastic bags being used in HRM. Halifax would join Montreal, Victoria & PEI in banning plastic bags.
