Farewell to the Oxford!
After 80 years of entertaining Haligonians with showing films on the big screen, the Oxford theatre will close it’s doors for good tomorrow. For their last few week of being open, the Oxford theatre has been offering screenings of classic movies for only $5 a ticket, with all proceeds going to the IWK in Halifax. A friend of mine went to see the Wizard of Oz on the weekend at the Oxford and told me an elderly couple sat next to her and they told her about how they had their first date at the Oxford Theatre in 1943. They were high school sweethearts and have been together every since (OMG SO CUTE! SOMEONE PASS THE TISSUE!).
Last night my parents and I went to see The Grand Budapest Hotel. GREAT movie! I had already seen it once before but loved seeing it again! AND my parents hadn’t seen it before and they loved it! Have you seen it? You should!
As soon as the movie ended everyone started clapping and taking family photos all over the theatre. It was sad! I instantly remembered being a kid and how often my mom and dad took me to that theatre. Oh the memories! The nostalgia was very real! Here’s a few photos I snapped:
The last screening at the Oxford Theatre is tomorrow night at 7:00PM when they will show Titantic. SO SAD!
Goodbye Oxford theatre, you’ve been so good to all of us in Halifax!
